Thunderstruck Conservation - Protecting a West Virginia Treasure
Thunderstruck is a 2,000 acre conservation project located in the Allegheny Highlands of West Virginia. The vision for Thunderstruck is permanent protection of a critically important resource through the application of new preservation incentives.
Thunderstruck supports one of the largest environmentally significant and biologically diverse relatively intact forested blocks in the Central Appalachians. Some of the Eastern United States’ best remaining examples of high altitude habitat are found on Thunderstruck with associated endangered and threatened species.
Due its high biodiversity, the property was designated a top conservation priority for The Nature Conservancy, who assisted with the Thunderstruck partnership’s purchase of the property from Mead Westvaco in June 2007.
The land use plan for Thunderstruck incorporates significant preservation of ecologically sensitive areas, restoration of endangered species habitat, implementation of sustainable timber practices, and low impact limited conservation development on a small portion of the property.
"This is a thrilling project,” says Randy Wilgis, President of Environmental Banc & Exchange, (EBX). “Thunderstruck represents a perfect candidate to create the first significant habitat conservation bank in the East Coast area.”
EBX is America’s leading turn-key provider of ecosystem mitigation and restoration solutions and will be implementing the Thunderstruck habitat conservation bank.
